The Borough is a fast-paced café, but we care just as much about how our people feel as we do the people we serve. Our staff is our community: students, experienced hospitality people, and anyone looking for a part-time or full-time role with a team that shares an all-hands-on-deck mentality and genuinely enjoys being together.

Looking to start at the beginning of a GVSU semester?
Our two main hiring periods happen before the start of each semester:
Fall semester: Applications open mid-July
Spring semester: Applications open early December

What that means for us is...
- At least 15 hours of availability each week—usually around three shifts
- Regular weekend availability
- A commitment beyond just one semester
- Some availability during GVSU breaks, since The Borough stays open year-round
- Reliable attendance and clear communication
an all-hands-on-deck attitude
While we train for Barista/FoH and BoH positions, everyone plays a role in food prep, cleaning, dishes, and supporting each others wherever possible.
If you think quickly, notice what needs to be done, and enjoy solving problems alongside other people, you will do well here.

We believe food brings people together, and getting to play a small part in someone’s day is one of the best parts of what we do.
If you believe everyone deserves kindness, take time to notice the small ways you can make someone’s day better, and are willing to take an extra moment for conversation when the day allows, you will fit right in.
someone who genuinely likes the rush
During our busiest seasons, there are days when the rush is can take up the whole shift. You may spend six hours moving quickly, juggling multiple priorities, communicating constantly, and figuring out what needs to happen next. We will train you and support you, but you should be someone who enjoys being busy, stays kind when things get chaotic, and leaves a hard shift feeling accomplished—not completely defeated by it.
